I ummed and arrred over participating in The Artists Voice protest, for all the reasons that have already been well documented: The only people its effecting are those already getting harmed; I'd lose money not save it; What good will it do, I'm just a small fish; How will this make a difference? RaRaRa.
What is has done (very successfully) is raise awareness. It made some noise!!!!
So you didnt participate? Who cares. Just by mentioning it, you've let others know of this subject. You've alerted at least one more person to the impact of stolen content. You've opened someone elses eyes. Which means people may become a little bit more aware of what they are buying. It got you thinking about it. Thats worth it.
I read
Sasy's post about her experiences and I tell ya, thats a whole load of stress right there. And for what? For the few people in our metaverse that like to 'cheat the game', who like to 'beat the system' or 'didnt know any better'. These idiots dont realise the impact theft has on others. Worse still, they dont care. Its up to us to do something about it - so if you recieve something that you think is ripped, report it, and dont pass the content on.
I tell you what, my eyes have certainly been opened in the course of the last few days. Its shown me how deep this all really goes, the lengths that content creators really have to go to protect their creations, and I learnt about more things I can do to stop content theft...
From the
StepUp! campaign:
- Right-click on the object for sale, the creators name should match the name associated with the store.
- Is the whole store full of items from different creators?
- Look at the creators profile. Did they start SL last week and are making fantastic stuff? It could be an indication of an alt selling stolen items.
- Dont confront the suspected thief, or you could end up with an abuse report against you, and they could move on. Take a snapshot, save a landmark, put this in a notecard and send it to the original creator.
Just like any protest, people dont think beforehand "Oh - if I stand before this army tank, I might get runneth over", they think "People need to be aware of this". And that is the reason I participated.
I'll get off my soapbox now and will resume normal blogging. :)
