I thought I was the last to know how to turn on shadows on the 2.0 viewers, but it looks like I'm not. So to save y'all from spending as much time reading other how-to's, I thought I would just write my own. Who knows if its the right, or even best way to do it - I just got it from other sites.
Firstly, find a location. Believe me, you need to do this first. Shadows causes as much lag as a 2006 Second Life Jazz Club.
Next up, find your pose and position your camera.
If not already, activate your Develop menu by pressing Ctrl-alt-q.
In the develop menu, choose Rendering, then tick Framebuffer Objects...
...then Deferred Rendering...
...then Global Illumination.
Voila! From this to...

Next up - its time to play :)
Open up the Environment Editor (World, Sun, Environment Editor)...
Here is where you can fiddle with the default Windlight settings (and create/save your own). Play as much as you like; you can easily change it back to Default - which it does whenever you log back in. You cant mess this up!
For even more fun, click on the lighting tab. Its here where you can change things like:

3. The angle of the sun
4. The color of things around you
5. The brighteness of your surroundings
So you can have soft lighting with long shadows...

To play some more, open the Advance Sky editor.

This is the best shadow tutorial, for me. Even a caveman can do it. Thanks! :)
Thank thank you thank you. I love tutorial posts...even more than fashion ones at times. Did I just say something Sacriligious. Thanks again, S
OMG - I LOVE YOU, BANANA!!!
1) This post made me Laugh Out Loud, especially at this: "Firstly, find a location. Believe me, you need to do this first."
2) I'm soooooo glad it's so DAMN COMPLICATED because now I don't feel so stupid for not knowing what the hell I'm doing.
3) No wonder creators are also putting prim eyes in with the normal ones. *hugs all those creators*
4) BWAHAHAHAHA - the picture at the end! ♥

Hi Banana, I had problem turning on 'deferred rendering', and as a result, I could not turn on 'global illumination' either. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your time:-))
xx Cheryl
Heya Cheryl. The only thing I can suggest is to make sure you turn the three on in the order I posted.
If youre still having probs, it may be a graphics card issue with your computer. :(
Hi Banana, thanks for your reply! Yes I followed exactly the steps you wrote in your blog but still could not turn on the 'deferred rendering', so looks like it could be my graphics card, if so, do you have any advice which graphics card I should buy? I'm currently using Nvidia GeForce 8600. Sorry for asking so many questions.:-))
I'm running that one too (GeForce 8600 GT) so I have no idea why its not working for you. Maybe try the SL Q&A website here - http://blogs.secondlife.com/community/answers?view=overview
Sorry I cant be of more help!!
Ok Banana I will ask Linden Labs. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me! xxxx

Hey Cheryl - make sure your settings are on high (or ultra)! I just turned mine down, and found that clicking the 'Deferred Rendering' does nothing (ie, it doesn't tick). I hope this solves your issue!!
(its funny, the things you think of in the shower...)
Thank you very very very much for this info. I will share it with others on my blog
Great tutorial...but for some reason "deferred Rendering" is not highlighted so i can not click it, neither is Global Illumination....any ideas?
Anon - have a read through the above comments. (In summary, make sure your settings are on Ultra, and turn on the three in the order above)
Thank you for this!!!
Bannana, I did all you indicated and my screen went blank. I mean the flexi prim hairs are showing as usual but the whole room, body, avatar etc are black!
Omagad what to do?
